Board Notes: Transitions and Fall Elections

Sunday, June 12, 2016

NAEHCY is the leading voice for homeless children, youth and education in the country. This is attributed to a history of strong leadership, fearless advocates, and a dedicated Board of Directors. In the past few months, NAEHCY has experienced some transition within our leadership. We want to keep our members informed of those changes. The unexpected passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act and other professional obligations led our President, Frank Migali and Vice President, Kenya Haynes, both McKinney-Vento State Coordinators, to step down. We remain grateful for their service and are happy they continue to be members of NAEHCY!  Their departure obligated the Board to follow the procedures outlined in our By-Laws and applicable state laws for vacancies in Board officer positions. Those procedures required the Board to appoint a new President and Vice President.

We are proud to announce the Board has appointed Kerry Wrenick, McKinney-Vento Liaison from Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools as President and Lorraine Husum Allen, former McKinney-Vento State Coordinator from Florida, as Vice President.  Both Kerry and Lorraine have long histories as NAEHCY members, and Board members, and are helping guide NAEHCY through this transition. NAEHCY By-Laws and applicable laws empower the Board to appoint the President and Vice President for the unexpired part of the terms. However, we value our members’ input and would like to strike a balance between leadership stability and membership involvement.  For that reason, the Board has appointed Kerry as President for the unexpired part of the term (i.e., until the membership meeting at the 2017 conference), and has appointed Lorraine to fill the role as Vice President until the membership meeting at our 2016 conference in Orlando.  With our members’ approval, we will call a special election at the membership meeting in Orlando to elect a new Vice President. The elected Vice President will serve as Vice President for one more year, President for two years, and Past President for one year. As always, the membership meeting will be held on the Monday evening of the conference (October 31, 2016), location to be determined shortly.
